I’m a 50-plus yo physician in the San Francisco Bay Area. In college I was a competitive gymnast, but after my medical training I got way out of shape and gained 60 lbs., experienced a difficult mid-life transition, and figured out how to turn it around.  I succeeded in getting back into shape and keeping it up, and I’m passing that experience along with some up-to-date research and a lot of surprising facts! Note for men 65 and plus: if you’ve made it this far, you’re a “senior,” congrats the odds are that you’ve successfully navigated middle age. If not, it’s never too late, and you’re falling apart, the principles still apply. The human body must improve from proper care. It’s a law of nature.

In my spare time I like to play guitar, write, and relax with my wife. My gym routine consists of twenty minutes of weight training and 30 minutes of cardio, 4-5 days a week, and packed with a simple but scientific approach to exercise. I take a daily men’s multi-vitamin, don’t bother with herbals and protein supplements, and have substituted red meat for seafood. Most of our diet is plant based: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts.  The real challenge is what not to eat – added salt, sugar, and oils. We are constantly reading food labels to keep those addictive weight-increasing substances out of our bodies. Watch the documentaries “PlantPure Nation” and “Fed Up” for some healthful and entertaining education about what to eat,  and what not to eat.
