Name three of the top ten killers for middle-age men

May 18, 2011

Mortality increases noticeably in middle age men, and nearly all of the causes are preventable!

No. 1: Heart disease: If you feel like a truck is parked on your chest and you’re breaking out in a sweat, it’s a medical emergency, so call 911.  If it’s not that bad but you’re still in doubt, seek medical attention to get a definitive answer.

No. 3: Injuries: Alcohol related motor vehicle crashes, fires, and falls are the top causes. Even after surviving a violent event, the death rate is higher for several years due to chronic complications. Poisoning is high on the list. Keep the poison control number handy: 800-222-1222.

No. 4: Stroke: The F.A.S.T. test helps spot symptoms. Face. Ask for a smile. Does one side droop? Arms. When raised, does one side drift down? Speech. Can the person repeat a simple sentence? Does he or she have trouble or slur words? Time.  It’s critical, because brain damage is occurring. Call 911 if symptoms are present.
